Gemma Anderson was born in Belfast in 1981 and studied printmaking at the Royal College of Art, London. She has exhibited widely and her work is held in many private and public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum.
This series of sixteen etchings of psychiatrists and their patients is a result of collaboration between Anderson and consultant forensic psychiatrist, Dr Tim McInerny. Created at the Bethlem Royal Hospital and a number of other medical units across London, the sitters are identified by a pseudonym only, with no indication of whether they are patient or psychiatrist.
The rich imagery includes objects of personal significance to the sitters, together with plants, minerals and animals that have been used historically to treat mental illness.
In these complex portraits, Anderson and McInerny explore the relationship between psychiatry and visual art, examining the historical representation of mental disorder in the arts and using the portraits as a visual metaphor for the therapeutic alliances and relationships between doctors and patients in mental health settings.
