To celebrate its tenth birthday, Limerick Printmakers Studio & Gallery is holding an exhibition of large-scale prints created by gallery members. The artists were given a brief to create live-size prints, and this theme was to be reflected in either the idea behind the work or in the scale of the individual pieces.
The only condition was that the work should be at least A1 in size.
Featured artists include Vivienne Bogan, Eithne Deloughry O’Byrne, Pamela Dunne, Clare Gilmour, Gavin Hogg, Dan Kenny, Des Mac Mahon, Marian McGrath, Desmond McLoughlin, Mary Meskell, Mary O’Dea, Suzannah O’Reilly and Derek O’Sullivan.
Gavin Hogg’s print, Heads You Win, Tails You Lose? stems from the imaginative play of language and comprises nine highly decorative collographs of warm oranges, reds and greens. His work suggests that something which is initially perceived as being simply decorative could, in fact, have a deeper imaginative resonance.
Mary O’Dea’s black and white print Oasis deals with the contrast between the idealistic kind of life which consumerism offers, and the actual one it delivers. Her interest lies in the concept that for many people, consumerism has replaced the role of religion and she asks what gaps this has left in people’s everyday lives.
Suzannah O’Reilly’s huge collograph landscape perfectly the setting sun on the Tipperary hills near her home. For her photographic work, Mary Meskell played around with the idea of “life-size” and “the size of life”, exploring the notion of “the unbeatable human spirit that can rise up and overcome the darkest of human situations”. All of the prints are unframed and the different media includes collographs, silkscreens, photography, woodcuts and monoprints.

The gallery is open from Mondays to Fridays, 11am to 5.30pm and on Saturdays 10am to 4pm. Admission is free
