Features the work of acclaimed Kilkenny-based Hungarian artist, Tunde Toth. Marking the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the exhibition, entitled ‘A Journey – Layers & Readings’, is a collection of works in the media of experimental paper art, fibre and dry point mono print.
Practicing in Ireland since 1998, Tunde specializes in paper and fibre art, experimental papermaking processes and printmaking. Inspired by surfaces, layers and textures of landscapes and urban environments, Tunde’s work is also a ‘reading’ process: an exploration and investigation of traces, marks, imprints, space and distance. Tunde works with natural plant fibres, i.e. cotton, abaca, esparto, bamboo, rush, straw, grass etc, as well as various handmade papers, raw silk fibres, textiles, found objects and old fabrics, lace and soil.
‘A Journey – Layers & Readings’ evolved around the observation, collection and transformation of a visual material, unearthed from natural and built environments, fragmented forms and the changing images of land/city scapes. Multi-layered, dream-like visions of landscapes and strong images emerge through her journeys in Hungary (‘Enchanted Hills’), Italy (‘Bologna series’), Egypt (deserts), Ireland (‘Horizons’; ‘Woodstock Daydream’) and Tasmania (‘Wilderness’).
